WHEN the 2018 Pirelli calendar launched last week, it did so with a suitably fabulous gala attended by its stars: from Naomi Campbell to P Diddy, Adwoa Aboah and RuPaul. Shot by Tim Walker, styled by Edward Enninful and using an all-black cast to reimagine the Alice in Wonderlandfairytale, it marked a cultural milestone as well as a fashion extravaganza – and Naomi Campbell's fourth turn featuring in one of the brand's iconic calendars. “I’ve done it every decade of my career," she explained "and to do it again – well, I’m honoured to be part of such a great group of wonderful people and talent.”
Some of the people Naomi both starred and celebrated alongside are those who have been in her life throughout her career – and after the gala, went for dinner together to continue the celebrations (“I don’t go out out in New York so often,” she says, “it has to be a really special occasion”). “I love Puff: he’s inspiring, he’s motivating, he’s incredibly supportive to me – like a brother figure, and he’s always there. It’s the same with RuPaul; I’ve known him since I was 20 years old. He’s so witty and intelligent, the ultimate perfectionist and the ultimate businessman. He’s wonderful, he really is.”
What the evening celebrated was both black beauty and long-standing friendships, alongside fantasy in its purest form. “To have a black Alice is to have a new way of seeing Alice," explained Walker to Vogue, Campbell continuing to explain that “Being part of a new interpretation of a fairytale that we all know is wonderful – and it’s perfect timing: you’ve seen Alice in Wonderland all white, and now you’re seeing this version. A fairytale is a fantasy, so you can interpret it whichever way you want – it’s all in your mind, so things can appear however you want them to be."
